1 TRAP
Humane cage trapping
A licensed trapper places a cage trap in the roof or ceiling space at the active access or nesting location, baited with apple or similar. The trap is checked the following morning.
Licence required
2 RELEASE
Release within 50 metres, same property
The possum must be released on the same or adjacent property, within 50 metres of the trapping site. It is illegal to relocate a possum to a park, reserve, or property more than 50 metres away, this causes territorial stress and is typically fatal for the animal.
50m maximum · same property
3 PROOF
Seal the entry point within 24 hours
The entry point through which the possum accessed the roof must be permanently sealed on the same day, before dark. A possum will return to its nesting site within hours of release if the entry point remains open.
Must be sealed before dark
🦘 Possum
Trichosurus vulpecula / Pseudocheirus peregrinus
🐀 Rat / mouse
Rattus rattus / Mus musculus
Sound
Heavy thumping, bumping, and dragging sounds. Loud, possums are much larger than rats and move more deliberately.
Sound
Light, fast scratching, scurrying, and gnawing sounds. Much lighter than possum movement, like something small moving quickly along beams.
Timing
Just after dusk (entering the roof to sleep) and before dawn (leaving to forage). Quiet through most of the night.
Timing
Throughout the night, in short bursts. Roof rats are nocturnal and active from dusk to dawn with frequent movement cycles.
Other signs
Loud hissing, screeching, or coughing like vocalisations when disturbed. May be seen on the roof or in nearby trees at dusk.
Other signs
Droppings along wall edges and behind appliances. Gnaw marks on food packaging, wiring, and structural timber.
Treatment
Licensed trapping → release within 50m → permanent entry point proofing within 24 hours.

🏚️ Eave gaps and fascia boards
Gaps between the fascia board and roof tiles, or displaced fascia timber, are the most common possum entry point in Melbourne homes, particularly in older properties.
Sealed with metal mesh and timber repair
🪟 Eave ventilation covers
Plastic ventilation covers on soffit panels deteriorate over time and are easily pushed in by a possum, a very common access point in brick veneer homes built before 2000.
Replaced with metal mesh ventilation
🏠 Roof tile overlaps
Slipped or lifted roof tiles create a gap at the ridge or where tiles meet the gutter line. Brushtail possums are heavy enough to lift displaced tiles to widen an existing gap.
Tile re-bedding and metal flashing
🌳 Tree to roof contact
Overhanging branches provide a bridge from adjacent trees directly to the roofline. Possums use these as a travel route and can create new entry points once on the roof.
Branch trimming and gap sealing
📡 Antenna and cable penetrations
Roof antenna mounts, TV cables, and solar panel cabling often leave small gaps where they penetrate the roofline sufficient for ringtail possums and a starting point for brushtail entry.
Sealed with metal flashing or silicone
🏗️ Hip and valley junctions
The junction between hip and valley roof sections often has a small gap covered only by a ridge cap, which shifts over time and can create an access point large enough for a possum.
Ridge cap re-bedding and pointing

Add possum box
Supply and installation of a possum nest box in a suitable tree on the property, recommended for all possum removal jobs.
Licensed Wildlife Controllers
Our technicians hold the Wildlife Controller Licence required under Victorian law to legally trap and handle possums.
Entry proofed same day
We seal the entry point before dark on the same day as removal, the only approach that prevents the possum returning that evening.
Possum box supply and install
We supply and install possum boxes in nearby trees, the most effective way to give the displaced possum an alternative and reduce re-entry attempts.
Written reports
Every job produces a written report, useful for insurance purposes, rental property records, and confirming the legal process was followed.
Proofing warranty
All entry point proofing work carries a written warranty, if the possum re-enters through a sealed point, we return to re-assess at no cost.
All Melbourne suburbs
Possum removal available across all Melbourne suburbs, brushtail possum activity is year round, with peak roof entry in autumn when possums seek shelter.
