House fly
Musca domestica
Most common indoor fly
Decaying food waste, wet garbage, compost, animal droppings, and any moist organic matter. Outdoor bins, compost heaps, and uncovered food are the most common Melbourne sources.
Enters through doors, windows, and gaps. Active in daylight, rests on walls and ceilings at night. The grey-brown fly with four dark stripes you see in kitchens.
Source removal (clean bins, seal compost, remove decaying matter) combined with residual spray to window frames, sills, and entry points.
Source + residual spray
Blow fly
Calliphora / Lucilia spp.
Metallic blue or green
Decaying animal matter only, a deceased rodent, possum, or bird in a roof void, wall cavity, subfloor, or garden. The breeding source is almost always an animal carcass.
Larger (8–14mm), metallic blue or green sheen. Appearing indoors from a ceiling, wall, or specific room is a strong indicator of a carcass in the structure. Often heard buzzing before seen.
Locate and remove carcass from roof void, wall cavity, or subfloor. Residual spray alone is temporary, blow flies return until the source decomposes completely or is extracted.
Carcass location + removal
Drain fly
Psychodidae spp.
Small, fuzzy, moth-like
Organic slime (biofilm) inside sink drains, floor drains, and overflow holes. They breed inside the drain pipe itself, not in the food waste that goes down the drain.
Very small (2–3mm), fuzzy-winged, slow-moving. Clustered around sinks, bathroom drains, and floor drains. Seen resting on walls near water sources. Does not come from the sewer.
Mechanical drain cleaning to remove biofilm, followed by enzyme drain treatment applied inside the pipe. Spray on adult flies does not solve drain fly infestations.

🗑️ Outdoor bins and bin areas
House fly
Food residue on bin walls and lids provides a breeding site, particularly in summer when decomposition accelerates.
→ Weekly bin cleaning with disinfectant, tightly fitting lids, bin placement away from doors and windows.
🌱 Compost and food waste
House fly
Open or inadequately covered compost bins and food scraps left in outdoor areas are a primary Melbourne house fly breeding site in warmer months.
→ Covered compost with no exposed food scraps; no food waste left in open containers.
🏠 Deceased animal in roof void
Blow fly
The most common cause of sudden blow fly infestations inside Melbourne homes, a deceased rodent, possum, or bird in the roof cavity or wall.
→ Requires roof void inspection and carcass removal before fly numbers reduce permanently.
🌿 Deceased animal in garden or subfloor
Blow fly
A deceased animal under decking, in a garden bed, or in the subfloor space, blow flies can detect a carcass from hundreds of metres away.
→ Thorough search of outdoor areas and subfloor; carcass bagging and disposal.
🚿 Kitchen and bathroom drain biofilm
Drain fly
Organic slime (biofilm) inside the drain pipe, not food waste, but the bacterial film that forms on pipe walls. Often thickest in slow-draining or rarely-used drains.
→ Drain cleaning tool to physically remove biofilm, followed by weekly enzyme treatment poured into the drain.
🐾 Pet waste in the yard
House fly
Dog and cat droppings not collected promptly are a significant house fly breeding site in Melbourne backyards, particularly in warmer months when development is faster.
→ Daily collection and disposal; residual spray to yard perimeter.
$150 – $220
House fly treatment
Inspection, source identification, and residual spray to entry points and resting zones for house fly infestations.
$220 – $320+
Blow fly treatment
Roof void or subfloor inspection, carcass location and extraction, and residual spray. Quoted after inspection if access is complex.
$150 – $200
Drain fly treatment
Drain inspection, mechanical cleaning, and enzyme treatment for drain fly infestations at kitchen and bathroom drains.
Source first approach
We find and eliminate the breeding source before applying spray, the only approach that delivers lasting results.
Species specific method
House flies, blow flies, and drain flies require completely different treatments, we identify before we treat.
Roof void inspections
For persistent blow fly problems, we inspect and access roof cavities and subfloor areas where carcasses are most commonly found.
Service guarantee
If fly activity persists beyond the expected timeframe, we return and reassess at no additional cost.
Written reports
Every visit documents species, source found, treatment applied, and specific prevention recommendations.
