Safety first

When not to approach a wasp nest yourself

🚫 Do not approach or disturb the nest before calling us
A European wasp nest disturbed without protective equipment can trigger a mass defensive response from thousands of wasps, all capable of stinging multiple times. People with wasp venom allergies face risk of anaphylaxis, which is a potentially life-threatening reaction. Even without allergy, receiving a large number of stings simultaneously can cause a toxic reaction. Keep all people and pets away from the nest entrance, note where it is, and call us — we will attend the same day.

The one exception: very small paper wasp nests (fewer than 20 wasps) on easily accessible outdoor structures can sometimes be treated carefully at night when wasps are inactive, but only with full protective clothing. Any nest inside a wall cavity, underground, or within the building structure should always be treated professionally.

Identify the nest first

European wasp vs. paper wasp Melbourne's two nest building species

Treatment differs between species and the danger level differs significantly. Identifying which wasp you have tells us how urgently to attend and what equipment and approach to bring.

🐝 European wasp

Vespula germanica
High danger — professional treatment only

🪲 Paper wasp

Polistes species
Lower danger — can sometimes DIY if small

Identify

Similar size to a honey bee (12–17mm). Bright yellow with bold black markings. Holds wings flat at rest. No visible leg danggling in flight.

Identify

Slender, longer body (17–25mm) with yellow, black, and reddish brown colouring. Legs dangle noticeably in flight. More slender than European wasp.

Nest

Large, enclosed papery structure, often hidden inside wall cavities, under roofing, in subfloor spaces, or underground. Can reach the size of a football by late summer.

Nest

Open, umbrella-shaped papery honeycomb, always visible, on eaves, fences, tree branches, outdoor furniture legs, and window frames. No outer covering.

Size

A mature colony can contain 3,000 to 10,000+ workers by late summer, dramatically more than a paper wasp nest.

Size

Typically 20 to 200 wasps at most, significantly smaller than European wasp colonies. Each cell is visible in the open honeycomb.

Aggression

Will swarm and sting repeatedly if the nest is disturbed. Does not die after stinging. A single wasp can sting multiple times and release alarm pheromones that recruit other workers to attack.

Aggression

Will sting if the nest is touched or if someone approaches very closely, but not typically aggressive at a distance. Less reactive than European wasps.

Season

Peak danger in late summer and autumn (Feb–April) when colony is largest. Most common Melbourne wasp sting incidents occur in this period.

Season

Active spring through autumn. Nests are built fresh each season, old nests from the previous year are not reused.

European wasp

Insecticidal dust or liquid into nest entrance at dusk

Applied with full PPE. Dust is carried by workers into the nest interior, spreading through the colony to the queen. Full colony elimination takes 24 to 48 hours.

Paper wasp

Direct residual spray to nest at night

Applied when wasps are inactive at night. The open honeycomb structure means spray reaches all cells directly. Physical nest removal is possible once activity has ceased, 24 hours after treatment.

Where nests are found

Common wasp nest locations in Melbourne homes

European wasp nests are often hidden, the first sign is increased wasp traffic in and out of a small hole or gap. Paper wasp nests are always visible. These are the most common locations we find nests in Melbourne properties.

🏚️ Wall cavities & eaves

European wasps build large enclosed nests inside wall cavities and between roof cladding layers, usually discovered by noticing wasps entering a small gap or hole.

European

🌳 Trees & shrubs

Open paper wasp nests suspended from tree branches and in dense shrubs, often discovered when pruning or when children play near vegetation.

Paper wasp

🪨 Underground & subfloor

European wasps frequently nest underground in garden beds, compost heaps, and under timber subfloor structures, the entrance is a small hole in soil or wood.

European

🏠 Roof void

European wasp nests in roof voids are among the largest we encounter, the void provides a dark, protected space where colonies can grow without disturbance through summer.

European

🪑 Outdoor furniture & structures

Paper wasps build open honeycomb nests on eaves, fence rails, the undersides of outdoor furniture, letterboxes, and any sheltered outdoor surface.

Paper wasp

📦 Sheds & outbuildings

Sheds provide dark, undisturbed space that suits both species, European wasps in the structure cavities, paper wasps on the inside roof and frame.

When wasp danger peaks

Wasp activity through the year in Melbourne

European wasp colonies grow through summer, the larger the colony, the more wasps will respond to a disturbance, and the more dangerous removal becomes. Treating a nest in spring is significantly safer and more straightforward than treating in late summer.

Winter

Jun – Aug

Colonies dormant. Queens overwinter.

Spring

Sep – Nov

New nests established. Low colony size, best time to treat.

Summer

Dec – Feb

Colonies at maximum size. Peak sting risk. Call us.

Autumn

Mar – May

Workers die off. Queens leave to overwinter.
