The real flea problem

Where fleas actually live in your Melbourne home

This is why treating your pet is not enough on its own. Adult fleas, the ones you can see jumping on your pet, represent a tiny fraction of the total infestation. The rest is invisible, living in your home environment.

Where a flea infestation lives

In your home (carpets, furniture, flooring)

  • 95% in your home

On pet

  • 5%

Flea eggs

~50%

Laid on the pet and fall off within hours into carpet fibres, flooring gaps, and furniture. A single female can lay up to 50 eggs per day.

  • Vulnerable to treatment

Larvae & pre-pupae

~35%

Hatch from eggs and burrow deep into carpet fibres, avoiding light. Feed on organic debris and flea droppings, not on blood.

  • Vulnerable to IGR treatment

Pupae (cocoons)

~10%

The most resilient stage. Pupae are resistant to insecticides while inside their cocoon and can lie dormant for months until heat and vibration trigger hatching.

  • Resistant to treatment

Adult fleas (on pet)

~5%

The visible stage. Adults jump onto a host to feed, mate, and lay eggs, then the cycle restarts in your carpet.

  • Treated by pet product

Pet treatment alone removes the 5% on the animal. Professional home treatment targets the other 95% using a residual adulticide to kill hatching adults and an insect growth regulator (IGR) to prevent larvae from developing into breeding adults.

Where they concentrate

Room by room flea risk in Melbourne homes

Flea larvae avoid light and move toward warmth and protected areas. These are the highest risk zones in a typical Melbourne home with pets.

🐕 Pet sleeping areas

The highest concentration of flea eggs in any home, wherever your pet spends the most time sleeping. The warmth and regular activity accelerates hatching.

  • Very high risk

🛋️ Under sofas & armchairs

Larvae actively move to dark, sheltered areas, the space under upholstered furniture is one of the highest-density larval development zones in the home.

  • Very high risk

🪴 Carpeted lounges & bedrooms

Carpet fibres provide perfect larval shelter, particularly along skirting board edges and under furniture where larvae concentrate before pupating.

  • Very high risk

🚗 Car interiors (if pets travel)

Cars where pets ride frequently develop their own flea populations in the upholstery and carpet, separate treatment is required and can be included in a combined quote.

  • High risk

🌿 Outdoor kennels & runs

If your dog uses an outdoor kennel or yard regularly, the surrounding soil, grass, and bedding can sustain flea populations that continuously re-infest the pet.

  • High risk

🧹 Hard floors with gaps

Floorboard gaps, skirting board joins, and gaps under kickboards trap eggs and larvae, particularly in older Melbourne homes with timber flooring.

  • Medium risk

Before & during treatment

What you need to do before treatment day

Preparation directly affects how well the treatment works. These steps are not optional, they are part of the treatment process itself.

🧹 Vacuum all carpets and furniture

Vacuum thoroughly, including under furniture and along skirting boards. The vibration stimulates pupae to hatch, making newly emerged adults vulnerable to the treatment.

🛏️ Wash all pet bedding

Wash pet beds, blankets, and any fabric the pet sleeps on at the highest temperature the fabric allows. Remove and dispose of the vacuum bag immediately after vacuuming.

🐾 Treat your pet on the same day

Home treatment and pet treatment must happen the same day. Treating the home without the pet (or vice versa) allows the untreated source to immediately re-infest the treated environment.

🐠 Cover fish tanks & bird cages

Fish and birds are sensitive to insecticide residue, cover aquariums and turn off tank pumps during treatment and for 1 hour after.

🚪 Vacate the property for 2–3 hours

All people and pets must leave while treatment is applied and surfaces dry. Children and pets should not return until floors are completely dry.

🧽 Don't mop floors for 2 weeks after

Wet mopping removes the residual treatment from hard floors before hatching pupae are exposed to it. Dry sweeping is fine.

How we treat

Our flea treatment process

Professional flea treatment uses two active ingredients together an adulticide to kill hatching adults, and an insect growth regulator (IGR) to prevent larvae from developing into breeding adults. This dual approach is significantly more effective than adulticide alone.
