Why DIY spray fails

Why ants keep coming back after you spray them

This is the question we're asked more than any other. The short answer: spraying what you see treats a symptom, not the cause. Here's the actual mechanism.

1. A scout finds food

A single ant locates a food source, crumbs, spills, pet food and feeds.

2. It lays a pheromone trail

The scout leaves a chemical trail back to the nest, which other workers detect and follow.

3. A visible trail forms

Dozens of workers now follow the same path this is the line you see on the bench.

4. The colony stays untouched

Behind the visible trail sits the actual nest, often in a wall cavity or under paving with a queen producing more workers.

Killing the ants you can see does nothing to the colony. A nest can contain several thousand workers and one or more queens. Removing the visible trail with surface spray typically only kills a small fraction of the colony's workforce the queen keeps producing replacements, and a new trail often forms within days, which is why the problem looks like it "comes back."

💡 This is also why surface spray can make things look worse before they get better. Disturbing a trail with repellent spray can cause the colony to split or relocate, sometimes establishing a new trail in a different part of the house which can look like the problem has spread when it's actually the same colony adapting.

Identification

The two ants behind most Melbourne infestations

Treatment approach is broadly similar for both, but knowing which one you have helps predict where the nest is likely to be.

⚫ Black house ant

Ochetellus glaber

🟤 Coastal brown ant

Pheidole megacephala

Appearance

Small, shiny black, around 2.5–3mm long.

Appearance

Light brown to yellowish, around 2–2.5mm, larger "major" workers with big heads.

Nest sites

Wall cavities, roof voids, under paving, in timber and wall insulation.

Nest sites

Soil, garden beds, under concrete slabs, near air conditioning units.

Activity

Most active in warmer months, commonly seen on kitchen benches and bathroom skirting.

Activity

Aggressive foragers, active year-round in sheltered outdoor areas.

Diet draw

Sweet foods, pet food, and food residue on benches and floors.

Diet draw

Wide diet including other insects, sweet residue, and pet food left outdoors.

Where they get in

Common rodent entry points in Melbourne homes

Treating the rodents already inside is only half the job. Identifying and sealing how they're getting in is what stops the problem returning, this is the part of the inspection most DIY approaches miss.

Gaps where tiles meet the gutter line

Roof void & eaves

Shifted roof tiles, damaged sarking, and gaps at the eaves are the most common rat entry point in Melbourne homes, particularly older weatherboard and brick veneer properties.

  • Rats

Low toxicity, family safe products

Weep holes

Weep holes allow moisture to escape brick veneer walls but are large enough for mice and sometimes young rats to use as a direct entry point into wall cavities.

  • Rats

Damaged vents and subfloor access points

Subfloor & foundations

Broken or missing subfloor vent covers give rats direct access to the underside of the home, often leading straight up wall cavities into the roof space.

  • Rats

Gaps around plumbing and electrical entry

Pipe & cable penetrations

Where pipes and cables enter the home, under sinks, near the meter box, behind the hot water unit, gaps are often left unsealed during original construction or renovation.

  • Mice
  • Rats

Gaps under doors and garage panels

Doors & garage

A gap of 6mm under a door is enough for a mouse to enter. Garage roller doors without a proper seal are a frequent overlooked entry point.

  • Mice

Behind stoves, fridges, and built in cabinetry

Kitchen & pantry

Once inside, mice nest close to food sources, gaps behind built-in appliances and the base of cabinetry are common nesting sites once a mouse has gained entry elsewhere.

Our process

How we treat ant infestations properly

The goal is colony elimination, not just clearing the visible trail. That requires a different approach to a can of supermarket spray.
